Challenge: Obsolete (Basic Editing III)
Camera: Canon EOS-20D
Lens: Sigma 400mm f/5.6 APO HSM Macro for Sigma
Location: Western Utah Desert
Date: Jun 25, 2005
Aperture: 5.6
ISO: 200
Shutter: 1/200
Galleries: Nature, Animals
Date Uploaded: Jun 26, 2005

Two young males 'horsing around' on the ridge. There were about 200 other, more mellow wild horses that were in the area that was in the foreground.

The American Mustang is primarily descended from cavalry horses that were released into the wild at the cessation of hostilities in the War between the States. American Aboriginal people, settlers and cattle drovers freely captured and tamed them for several decades, then the internal combustion engine obsoleted most every-day needs for horses.
The primary demand for the wild horses of the desert in the 20th Century was from dog food companies. If THAT is not obsolescence, nothing is.

The challenge stated "Take a picture of something that has outlived its
usefulness." I can think of few thing that more accurately define the
challenge.

To the observer and the conservationist, there is a wondrous beauty in these wild horses. Ranchers see them as nuisances at best, thieves and fence breakers at worst. The BLM sees them as a responsibility to
husband, trying to thin the herds by auctioning off yearlings to would be
equestrians... but obsolescence and/or extinction is a real possibility
within our lifetime.

Are horses obsolete?

Great capture, feels very open and free. Gave you 6 due to the softness of the focus. Good Luck, really nice.

very nice, i would have liked to see a bit more cropping, greener grass and clearer mountains in the background (the latter i bet you want too). still, i love the capture of the horses.

This is a great image. The action captured here is visually intriguing and stimulating.
However, I only "get" the challenge theme from the title. It makes perfect sense and really does not nees the photograph to answer the challenge. But the picture without the title does not get it done.
Still, this is too good to score low in my opinion.

Nice picture though I think alot of cropping should have been done. Nice shot in there waiting to come out.

Nice capture, but the horses seem a bit overprocessed

This is simply a stunning picture! But for the life of me, I can not think of how this is obsolete.

I admit that at first I scored this lower because I didn't see how it fits the challenge, but I love the picture anyway and have bumped up my score. What a great wild west feel.

Nice angle on the topic, great action shot of the horses. I don't like the way the background appears, it seems there was a lot of potential there.

your capture is beautiful. the motion..composition..all great. but I hope this is not a repetitive comment left for you..I just don't see the relevance to the current challenge? a really solid 7, (higher if I didn't have to stretch my mind to think of why this means something old, broken, obsolete, etc.)

Endangered perhaps but obsolete, broken or even outdated certainly not in my opinion. However am open to being convinced prior to the end of voting. Otherwise the scene is wonderful but lacks depth of field. ---- I duly and respectfully will alter my vote, I will not punish someone for out of challenge without telling them and hearing their interpretation. I agree with your entry regarding obsolete. Now knowing that a 400mm lens was used it also changes certain things. I have requested that the ISO, Speed, Fstop, Lens etc be included in voting but have been turned down. Congrats a well deserved change from 1 to 7

If you could saturate the back mountains and grass this photo would rock and sell as a print!!
