 Shooting:
- I turned my softbox up (making a table out of it) and placed a leaf on top.
- Then shot with a Canon 50mm 1.8 lens reversed in front of a Canon EF-S 17-85mm IS lens.

Processing:
- Converted from raw
- Adjusted color to bring out some of the brown (just because I thought it gave the leaf character)
- Rotated the image for a more pleasing diagonal
- Reduced size
- Sharpened
- Put a thin white border around the edge
- Saved for web

By the way, the circle is caused by the 50mm lens being smaller than my 17-85. I tried cropping in tighter to get rid of the circle and I found that the image was actually a lot more interesting with the circle than without.

This didn't scream "granular" to me but I gave it an 8, because I love the color and detail. I actually looked at it for a long time just following the little trails. It reminds me of the layout for a subdivision.

I was ambivalent about the circle, but ended up liking it because it gives the feeling of intimacy; as though I am viewing the image through some sort of scope. If I was drunk when I voted, then I probably gave it a 10 and then reduced it to an 8 the next day:)

I like the color and details of this shot. I wish the blue edge around much of the border wasn't there, but I like the soft edge of it rather than a sharp transition.

While I like the image, the colors and the lighting I do not believe it fits the challenge as it has nothing to do with grains of something as far as I can see. I applaud you for staying away from the typical salt/sugar image but I think you went a little too far away.
