One of several ideas for this challenge, my other one was better, but for that very reason it will be mine and only mine forever!

NOTE: In retrospect I should have mentioned that
"Peter" was not harmed in the making of this photo, he now lives in my avacado garden and his agent says he is doing very well. That is in fact, salt, fortunately snails arent the quickest animal in the world so I was able to extract him before catastrophic harm was done. (I wanted to use him for future shots, but in review I saw that this one was satisfactory. Thank everyone for their concerns, comments, and critiques. 31 comments to me is better than a 8 avg score!

Personally, I don't care at all if the thing lived or died in the process of making this shot. I regularly purchase Snail Killer Pellets, so I'm not bothered in the least. Right now, these beasts are over-running everything in the area due to all the rain this Spring. Kill em all !

It is amazing to me that here we have at least two photographers who are less interested in reporting suffering than they are in perpetuating suffering. I wouldn't have guessed.

There is a little too much glare in this photo for me. I do like the way your have captured the salt in such detail, but I feel bad for the poor snail.

Very creative (though slightly 'evil') shot. Two minor suggestions be to get softer lighting, and a littler deeper DOF so more of the salt is in focus.

Great image. The lighting is really nice. I like the snail's shadow, and the translucency of the snail and shell, you can see it backlit. Great idea too, very creative and original.

Um, interesting, yes, but I hope the snail escaped unscathed? Is that really salt surrounding that poor snail? I'm gonna vote and pretend that that's really sugar that can do no harm to the little guy. Ok, that said, I like the stark lighting given the (I hope pretend) subject matter involved. The backlit shell is really nice, and it throws his antennae into stark relief.

Love the translucence of the shell, contrast, set-up.
So how many snails did you kill for this shot?

awww....that's MEAN!!!!!!

05/25/2005 12:44:39 AM
MEAN... did you let him out after? did he die anyway? :( As for the picture, highlights are blown on the top and focus is a little soft all around, but especially on the salt... focus on the snail is better, but right side is a little dark and there are two hotspots on teh shell and neck

That is mean, but funny!
