Challenge: Apple (Basic Editing III)
Camera: Canon EOS-300D Rebel
Location: Boulder, CO
Date: May 17, 2005
Aperture: 18
ISO: 400
Shutter: 1/20
Galleries: Macro

200mm focal length. No polarizing or other filters on the camera. Cropped down to 25% or less of the full image. Slight sharpening on the image file.

Getting only the Apple to reflect was a major pain.

Couldn't quite get the composition I wanted out of it, but I spent enought time on it, so it was time to call it done.

Ordered a lens/macro extension tube, but it didn't get here in time to use this week. I'm not really sure that it would have helped anyway because of the fairly big depth of field, and the angles and distances needed to get both the apple and the eye in the shot.

Thanks for the comments everyone.

I din't even realize how read the skin was, until a week later when I looked at it to see how it did. I knew the focus wasn't great but after 4+ hours working on it over as many days, it was time to call it good enough.

There were a couple of tricky parts to getting the reflection, and my technique still needs improvement...

1) The angles: The apple close to the lens, but just out of sight of the shot, and about 1/3 of the distance from the eye to the camera. Then I had my model move his eye around to get the apple as close to the center of the pupil as possible. Having the model Look about 1/2 way between the center of the camera and the apple seemed to work best.

2) The lighting: I did it outside, a few hours before twilight, but I think if I try it again, I'll shoot for a little after noon. I needed to get the apple really brightly light, and the face had to be protected from being lit too brightly, or you couldn't see the reflections. I had to build a black background to surround the model's eye, so no other reflections, besides the apple would get through. at first I kept getting a bunch of reflections from the street, etc.

Also important was having the overal lighting bright enough that I could get the action stopped, even when stopping down. I would have liked to stop all the way down to f/32 or so, but f/18 was the best I could do with the light I had.

3) Focus: See above note on overall lighting. Also, now that I've had a chance to play around with the macro extension tube I just got, I think that might have helped, especially if used closer to noon, with the aperature set down a few stops.

I like the idea but the tones are a little off & I'd like to see it sharper

Nice idea, but the picture is out of focus and the tint is off a little.

The apple of your eye is sitting over the left buttock of a woman in a short skirt? Somewhat interesting basic idea, but I have a personal dislike of the exact setup. The skin also seems abnormally red.

This is such a cool idea! The only thing that bugs me is over all image quality, it seems very compressed and noisy.

good idea. but i think that stronger lighting on the face would have helped a lot- as it is the skin is too much the same tone. a sharper focus would have been good as well

I tried & tried to get this shot but never succeeded. PLEASE explain how you got it! Great shot; congrats!

The shot is too red and there is something white below the apple. To pull this off you need a sharp, clear focus and I see this as too soft for much affect.
