Taken outside my house, a huge swarm of ants on my back porch. I took an apple piece, placed it in the middle of the pile of ants, and gave them a few minutes to swarm over it. Not a particularly inspiring shot, but I thought it was interesting. I set my ISO at 1600 so I could stop down for a depth of field yet still keep a fast enough shutter speed.
Post processing:
Levels, color balance to bring out the yellow/green of the apple, make the ants a little more purple/blue for contrast. Increased saturation, cropped, sharpened, save for web.

Great, though apple unrecognizable (for me..).

i like this picture. well two reason if you focused more or crop the picture or desaturate it
05/24/2005 05:11:34 PM
LOL, that's not an apple, that WAS an apple. Way to go on the originality, and the shot is nicely centred. Though there are a few distracting elements, I still like it. I sure wouldn't want to be an apple with a swarm of ants like that around :P

best photo in the challenge.

I hope to hell this ribbons. It's very well-made IMO. And, frankly, I'm sick of happy apples...

Woh... That's terrible ! Where did you took all those ants. Hard to vote on this ! I'll give 6 !

Its still good, the ten minute rule still applies even on anthills.

Original shot. I can't stand to look at it for too long though.. it's giving me the chills!

Most unappetizing. I will never look at an apple the same again.

Cool Photo...It may have been a little better at a different angle.... but very good.

Gross... but not awful.
05/19/2005 02:53:26 PM
Wow that's an ant pile! Maybe a tighter shot of just a few ants would of scored this higher. Right now it's just ants on an apple. I hope this is making sense.
05/19/2005 01:53:37 PM
ooooo--gave me a shock--very good though--you've made thousands of ants very happy.
05/19/2005 08:11:55 AM
Great capture, but a little disgusting ...
05/19/2005 12:18:15 AM
WOW that gives me the chills...8

While at first glance this may seem repulsive, this is actually a very compelling portrait of natural phenomena. You have captured the intense feel of the swarm with clarity and depth. Nice photojournalism.

Eeeeeew. But good! Very unique take on the theme.

Great picture ... of ants. Hard to see that it is an apple.
05/18/2005 05:30:24 AM
great idea, good macro, nice DoF ...
i suppose you set this up? it would have been even better if the apple had not been this amorphous lump but had some skin visible or something like that.
05/18/2005 04:52:54 AM
You have a problem!!
05/18/2005 12:27:07 AM
