Challenge: Outside Looking In (Advanced Editing IV)
Camera: Minolta DiMAGE A1
Location: My front deck
Date: May 3, 2005
Aperture: 2.8
ISO: 400
Shutter: 1/15
Galleries: Family, Candid
Date Uploaded: May 6, 2005

I took this photo looking in at my daughter looking out the window at me. I took it with my Dimage A1 and all I did was enhance the lighting a bit and cloned out some mud spatters that were on the window. The screen may be noisey to some but for me it added effect.

Hello from the Critique Club!!!

Composition:

The first thing that strikes me about this shot is how centered it is but in this case it works. As they say rules are always meant to be broken. There is a nice balance of the reflection and inside and it works to meet the challenge perfectly. Nice Job.

Background/ Foreground

The screen works both for and against this picture. It adds a nice texture to the shot to make it even more interesting but it also makes the shot a little on the busy side. The background is muted as it should be and the screen helps blur it even more.

Camera Work:

The focus is good and the camera appears to have focused on your daughter and not the screen. Changing the ISO to 200 might have reduced the noise in the screen. The lighting is nice and I love that you were able to capture the pink in her cheeks

Post-Processing:

I would have played with the crop a little to see if removing the bottom portion would have changed the look of the picture. I was just a little bit distracted by the reflection of the top of the deck going through her head, but when you capture a candid shot like this it is hard to get that exact moment back. Adding a border or edge might have improved this picture as well, but we all know how finicky the voters can be on this issue.

My Opinion:

I like the shot; it makes you stop and try to figure out how you got the picture. It has captured a moment in time of your daughter at a wonderful time of her life You have done well, keep up the good work.
The comments you received should encourage you to get out there and keep shooting as each picture we take adds to the learning process.

I hope you find these comments to be helpful, thank you for allowing me to critique your picture. If you have any questions or concerns feel free to contact me via PM.

Best of luck in your future photographic endeavors,

Karen Doss

Great expression, and interesting texture with the screen.

Screens can create some cool effects. This reminded me of the ghosts in Disney's haunted mansion. Much cuter ghost though.

I like the idea of this but might have cropped the whole picture below the chin so it is a mystery where it ends instead of the wierd floating head look. The child is beautiful.
