I am new to DPC and have joined in order to increase my motivation to get out and about with my camera. I find photography very relaxing and inspirational, but the pressures of living and working in the environments in which my profession demands highly restricts the amount of attention I can give to personal pursuits. I hope that a weekly challenge (and hopefully some constructive criticism) will give me the incentive I need to develop my photography.

I came across DPC a couple of days ago while on R&R, and although I do not have all my equipment with me I thought I should get started with a first submission. Nothing fancy and it is certainly not going to make a dramatic impact first time round, but here is an attempt at a rather clumsy metaphor. Natural lighting from my sister-in-laws apartment window, book on table with white paper to direct lighting. Using Nikon micro 105 lens (a trusty favourite) and was forced to rest camera on yesterday’s shirt (tripod is at home!) – not pleasant as yesterday was a stinka, and I think some camera movement from the mirror has subsequently detracted from sharpness. Would have liked a narrower aperture perhaps, but alas… no tripod… Post processing: adjusted curves and pushed the saturation slightly. I hope this is within the rules…

No rocks or scissors – nice challenge, but was not up to it this week. Am trying to rejuvenate my creativity during this break… looking forward to next week…

I loved your image though did give it a 9 for the comments I mentioned. I have to comment to tell you don't get discouraged, if you'll look at the images in the profile for the one that said "poor quality image..." you will notice that they have a TOTALLY different expectation on what quality is. You will find here that you can't please most everyone as it is usually the person interrpertation of what the challenge is about.

Still love your image.

Wow... I guess my taste is a little different to most voters.

Keep the great work coming though. It'll pay off soon enough !

i like the deep DOF, but at first it is hard to tell what this is. maybe a little more distance?

I hope a lot of the people learn from your image...you have met the challenge while creating a classy very detailed image. Your DOF is a little harsh and causes a little too much blur on the right side, but you did not stay inside the box when it came to shooting this. You apparently put a little thought to it and took some time setting it up. Good job

Nice idea. Wish the focus was better.

One of my favourites in this challenge. Shallow dof works really well and the lighting is great.

Edit, I've now finished voting, and I figured I'd might as well make the call - this is my favourite of the challenge. It might be a little abstract to win (apprently dpc'ers aren't really down with the whole abstract thing), but you've got my vote.

This gets a little Too out of focus in the bottom right. Apologies if the effect was intended, but it's bothersome to me. Good idea and color though.

simple and fascinating, one of my favorites, but I don't like the focus to be only on some pages and not on all of them

poor quality image, it is very blurry on the edges of the photo

looks out of focus

I really like this...the simplicity of it...plus one of the few "paper" entries I've come across. Very nice.

I'm sorry, I can't tell what this is. From a strict composition point of view it has a nice flow in the curves, but the blurriness is a distraction.

Really enjoyed the lighting in this, it makes the color so rich! Great job.

I'm guessing that this is a bible, but it's really hard to tell, the title didn't explain either.

It's a nice abstract macro image, but I don't feel that you made the connection to the challenge apparent.

A pretty shot, but I can't make out the relevance to rock, paper, or scissors, unless this is hair you're about to cut.
