Thanks to all of you for your comments. Especially skiprow, I see what you mean! I do like it better cropped like that. I am still new at this so to think to crop it short like that never occurred to me. :( Wish it had!

I entered this just because I thought it was a pretty good *pure* candid that fit in the dates. I didn't set any of this up, I was just snapping shots while my husband had the girls fishing. My daughter hadn't caught anything, so her expression reflects that.

The only comment that I was taken back by was that, and I quote - "be more flattering without the hair behind the ears". All I can say to that is that the picture wouldn't reflect my daughter at all then. She always has her hair behind her ears and I think that is adorable.

I might have shaperned/dodged the eyes, and had her turn left just a little for more light on the face.

this shot is loaded with potential. she's a doll, and the expression tells a story. i think you would have picked up a full point or two if you had cropped off down to halfway down her forehead and cropped off at least 40% off the right. the biggest thing going against the image was the time of day it was shot--that lighting is just too strong, and the background being so lit is competing unduly with your subject. a shame, because this really could have been a contender...

Good DOF, but the image could use a bit more saturation

Gosh, do I HAVE to be your model? She looks to be anxiously awaiting for THE MOMENT to pass........ - Like the use of DOF to diffuse the background, colors are not the best but not bad, like the composition. Image is on the soft side (maybe intended).

Sun is badly placed, causing distracting highlights in hair. Uncomfortable expression, and nothing appears to be sharp. Would be more flattering if hair was not tucked behind ears. Background is wonky. Subject placed to one side works well, but it might work better to completely crop out the writing on the t-shirt.
