Yes, this is composed of actual, living trees. As soon as I read the title for this challenge these trees sprang to mind.

Due to the terrain surrounding the trees, getting a picture I was happy with proved surprisingly difficult. To get this shot I had to stand in a moderately busy street at the base of a bluff. The trees at the top of the bluff cast distracting shadows on the Hi tree after 13:00, so I had to re-shoot this several times on different days to find a time when the traffic, shadows from the bluff, and construction in the field behind the tree all allowed for a decent shot. The tight crop and shallow DOF were done to reduce the visual clutter of the construction site behind the tree.

Trivia: this tree grows in the state were Arbor Day originated.

Processing: desaturated colors, increased contrast +-25, reduced brightness +-20, cropped slightly, scaled to proper dimensions.

great find, but suffers from a lack of aesthetic value.

Going back to leave some additional comments. this was an amazing find....trees spelling "hi", but technically, the picture leaves me wanting more. The fence is distracting and there just isn't much true clarity....seems washed out.

Very creative...like it. I wish the lighting was a little bit more special, but even so, this photo meets the challenge perfectly.

Great find. Too bad about the fence in the background. Hard to tell how far away it is from the trees. Could you have used a larger aperture to put the fence out of focus?

This is a nice image. I love how you were able to capture this unique image. I love how you did it in black and white to. The textures in this image are really nice. Nice work.
