Since I was so nicely asked to add some info on this picture, I will :)
It was shot in Harstad, Norway, which is pretty far north - above the polar circle. This is the aurora borealis that danced across the sky a few days before new years' 2004-05.
The lens used was the 18-70DX kitlens that goes with the D70, probably at f11 or something. The end result is a bit imperfect due to my lack of technical knowledge at the time, but you live and learn! It's a pretty long exposure, I guess 15 seconds.
I'll probably get back to the same spot, or other places in the region, to capture the northern lights more. A photo just cannot tell how beautiful and amazing it is when light dances across the sky, feeling like you're part of the Universe's private show (lapdance, anyone?).
This was a cloudy day, as you can see, the clouds lit by city lights (the city is behind me). I took a night trip up to the highest point in the city, hoping for the clouds to clear up, a thing they hadn't in the past three days - hoping for northern lights. There was, and it was really dramatic, passing across the sky in a matter of seconds. It was impossible to capture. This, out of 30-40 tries, was the only one that gave any justice to the lights. You can imagine how it looked, all at the back of the lights, you can see the curtain movement. That's how the whole sky looks.
