Double exposure with green tungsten on left to avoid spill and strobe on right. The sky and dove were shot by me and placed into the window made in Corel draw.

wonderful concept; the sort of art I would like to work with once I've mastered the basics

This is definitely a photo worthy of study. I take it that the Dove and window were lit by the strobe.

I agree with scalvert here.
This is definately a surreal photo. It is great technically and it looks very thought through composition.
But personally it does not work for me. It is too perfect IMO. Too technical.
For me, surrealism involves a lot of our thoughts and emotions, rather the the technical details. Here I see too many details and too less emotions.
For example, I would like this one better if your face were less in focus. If the colors were blending into each other more then being two completely separate parts of your face.
Also, the dove is unnecessary IMO. I want to be able to seek the light in your photo. I don't need artificial elements to show me their right direction. The dove is looking to the window. It makes me think that there's where the light is. And I find that very distracting.
But from you I have learned to expect the most surprising ideas. So I can hardly wait to see which is your actual entry!

That's a lot of effort to walk away from, but I think you made the right choice. There is absolutely no question that this is surrealism (and probably a 6+ score), but you'd get dinged a bit for the lighting on the green face, and there's something lacking (for me) on the appeal factor- perhaps the stoic expressions. I have no doubt that an entry you'd choose over this would score better because this topic is right up your alley.

This sir, is an astounding photo, and I am certain it would have done quite well in the challenge. I can hardly wait to see what you opted to replace this with... it must truly be a gem.
