Photograph Information Photographer's Comments
Challenge: Ansel Adams (Advanced Editing IV)
Camera: Canon EOS-10D
Location: Madison, WI
Date: Mar 6, 2005
Aperture: 5.6
ISO: 100
Shutter: 1/90
Galleries: Landscape, Nature
Date Uploaded: Mar 6, 2005

Converted to BW via channel mixer. Light USM. I know little enough about Ansel Adams' style that I'm uneasy entering a challenge like this, but I like the photo, so there.

Unbelievable how that sky is dark. Did you use an ND filter on the camera or did you apply the effect in PS?

IMHO your sky doesn't match the rest of the picture. This makes the shot look unnatural and forced into a niche...

Works for me as an AA type of subject, though i think he would have found more contrast within the tree in a print than there is here. I also find tthe composition a touch congested for AA - all elements seem crowded into the left-hand side of frame. I can see the effectiveness (photographically and challenge-wise) of the distance available image right, and that shooting from any further left would have ruined the light, but nevertheless that crowding is a bit of a problem to my eye. I like your care with overall range though, very effective.

What a dramatic display of tree-power. Yet, did you not over do it a bit.? A great photo must be dramatic, but should still be realistic. The black sky with the pale foreground shouts "digital manipulation". Go and re-shoot this photo and wait for perfect light conditions. You will agree with me.

Interesting, this is very contrasty, even too contrasty, as there is detail missing in highlights. Nice composition, and nice idea, but lacks the high quality of a AA print. <6>

Nice photo, I like the full range of shades and how it goes from dark in the sky to light on the ground.

not sure everyone will go for the centering of the trees in the frame but i like it. like the contrast in the sky too.

Ghostly but good, tree smack in the middle? maybe, maybe not
