This is more an exercise in exposure and editing for me than winning or placing highly. Therefore I genuinely don't care where this ranks and, in fact, I almost didn't submit for that reason since I fully expect around 20 pieces of super-burned 'digital art' to occupy the top spots...

Shot taken during the London GTG.

The 'peeling' bark is an entirely natural phenomenon, for those that don't know - it's part of an overall process of air scrubbing, really - particles of various pollutants are isolated in sections of bark, which the tree then sheds. The many plane trees in London are sometimes referred to as the city's lungs. Glad this shot was yours Jon - highly underrated.

I really like this...it has so much to admire.
The little detailed things like the light hitting the edge of the flaking bark are what make it special for me.

Well done Jon.

I didn't vote....I didn't feel qualified.....after researching and reading on the zone and trying to figure it out...this picture was what I thought would have qualified for a 10. I don't know much...but I know what I like :)

Now, this an image which employs the zone system. The image is exposed for the 4th zone and from here it pays due justice to the lower zones which are essential to capture the detail in these zones. However, such sublety is not grasped or overlooked for the spatial scenes, even if these suffer from improper exposure.

Very good work.

This was one of my picks to ribbon. Very well done imo, wish it would have placed higher.

Thanks Ed (e301) who found what I particularly wanted in the shot - and to all who commented.

Neat. Indeed a wide range of tones. Good luck on this dermatologic recreation....

Neat idea for the challenge. The focus seems good here, but something about the shot is preventing it from really "popping" out at me. There appears to be a lot of texture here, but I don't get a really strong feeling of it from the photo. Maybe a closer shot or different lighting? The b/w tones seem a bit warm, and maybe the texture would show better in a harsher b/w? I also would have liked it better with the top portion cropped more...just about to a square. I did that on my monitor and I liked it that way. I'm no expert, but I did give this an above average score. I like the idea a lot. I hope this is helpful.

Perfect, for the challenge at least. It has that trade-mark slightly centred-feeling composition, great sense of both tone and texture, a near-abstract interest which i find in a lot of his closer work. Great movement throughout frame too. lovely work.

Very lovely study of this plane tree (sycamore). The tonal range is very nice, and invites the eye to go around and see every bit of texture it can. 9

Subtle gradation in the tones and great contrast, perfect DOF, inspiring texture, abstract and minimalistic mood ( as I love this last times :).
And a closeup interpretation of Adams style.
For all that, a 9 .

Very good. To put in some critique then I find it litle too smooth and sharp to be AA style.
