I shot this through a piece of glass reflecting the candle and had to get my thumb in exactly the right place. I used a stick which i moved out of the way for the photo.
Single lightsource to copy the candle

But the photo really wasn't lit with this flame. And I wish it were.

i don't know anything about portraiture, so i'm using your image to try to figure out what i think i would or wouldn't do in this situation, as well as what i notice and get out of your image.

while i find your flame to be a bit harsh, it does work nicely with how well you've lit and composed the rest of the image. my eye makes a full circle within the frame, from the flame to your eyes to your ear, then around the collar back to the flame. the high contrast between you and the background are strong, leaving the range of tonalities in your face to bring out your character. you really have captured your personal intensity within your eyes. this is a solid effort. thanks for sharing! good luck!

Returning for comment:
A very good portrait with a somber expression and that look of concentration. The lighting adds to its dramatic feel. Bumping up.
