Challenge: Self-Portrait III (Advanced Editing IV)
Camera: Canon EOS-20D
Lens: Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II
Location: Lounge at home.
Date: Feb 11, 2005
Aperture: F/8
ISO: 100
Shutter: 1/250th
Galleries: Portraiture
Date Uploaded: Feb 11, 2005

I saw a pic similar to this on another site a while ago, and given that I did a front-on self portrait for my light entry, I thought I should hide myself a bit for this one...

Taken in the lounge, with the 580ex on a tripod and fired from the pc-sync connector on the 20D in manual mode. The black background is just from the light ratio, although there is a red velvet curtain in the background if you've got a bit of imagination...

Post processing was just crop, scale, light USM and save in the gimp.

Love the textures and tones. Adding in you favorite suckin' weed was a neat touch. Composition works for me. A slight turn of you head toward the camera would probably improve your final score (I like the shot though). Great job!
I think I would have just dubbed this "Reaper"

Not quite a profile but a story telling image done with good lighting and good taste. I would have desaturated the ear part to hold all values even. However, the detratction is not much from the overall impact. Very well conceived. Bumping up.

Returning for comment: Good technical work, and nice portrait idea. I think this might have more impact on the viewer if in profile. Looking so much away from the camera your back is almost turned doesn't engage me as the viewer.

The lighting is great.
I would probably clone out the shadow of the reed. Other then that this one is awsome!

Powerful compositon. My only nit is the shadow of the grass across the model's cheek and neck. Given the editing guidelines, I would have like to have seen this cloned out. Otherwise - perfect. The textures are most interesting.

Excellent exposure and clarity in this shot, if you were facing just a touch to the right you'd have got an eye and more interest into the picture? bumping1

Something about the lighting is harsh. This pose has GREAT potential, and I like it. Diffusing the light a little would help, and the black seems too even. If there were stars, or something, I would really believe he is looking at his farm. I like this, just trying to help you improve it a bit. 8

I love the title. It makes the shot appear to be taken outside (although i believe it isn't). I imagine you sitting on the porch looking out across the farm in the moonlight. Nice lighting and negative space.
