Ah ... now I understand something ;-) You know what? I'd be tempted to crop closer to the shelf-edge at the bottom. That line - I'm not sure that it adds anything, and it certainly removes some impact from the mystery of the image, the strangeness. And the other thing I'd certainly do if it were my image is to de-saturate it pretty heavily: all there is in this shot is to do with shape and progresssion of light - just as with my Apprehension shot, which is similar in intent I think - and i cannot see that the colour has anything giving you an advantage. De-sat would allow that shelf to blend into the rest of the image more completely, giving less ground to the scene, adding to the oddness that really makes it work.
also, if you were to crop to the front edge of the shelf and lose the shadow line there, it wouldn't matter that you were taking out the front edge of one of the critters' legs - in fact it would, i think add to the idea of an advancing swarm.
Is there anything in that further background that might be worth trying to bring out more? On the left side, where ther are those heads receding into the background, the impact is much more strong.
There's a bunch of stuff I really like here though Skip: you've controlled the light really well, the foreground figures pop but haven't gone over the limit so all the detail remains, and there's a great sense of texture in that grain as they disappear in to the gloom. Fun stuff. |
