Challenge: Old and New (Basic Editing III)
Camera: Canon EOS-300D Rebel

I thought about this challenge and had several ideas, but this one was here in the house and I thought it would be neat. The old toys are actually from my wifes childhood. Her parents gave us a box of old toys at christmas this year, so I used some of them...and the army guy is my sons. My how family values have changed huh. I guess that was what I was hoping to capture. I set them up on some typing paper with a white background. Nothing done to the image other than shrinking it to fit challenge.

I like this idea a lot and think I would have scored it a point higher if the background was a brighter white.

Made me laugh....that is a good thing

LOVE IT! The title really makes the photo that much better. Great job!

how true

I would have cropped on the bottom, and brought the new element to the front, too. This way it's not accented enough for me. Seeing the background I am also not sure about WB here, I feel too much yellows in the shot.

I don't see the old and new theme in this shot. Toys don't really fit the bill either

DOF

edit) I wasnt' tryinig to be blunt with my comment, but I thought you would understand what I was talking about. After reading your thread about this comment I feel perhaps it would be more appropriate to give a longer critque.

Often times having a portion of the background out of focus is fine, and in some cases it greatly enhances the image. But in this case you have made the "Dad" (GI Joe) the theme of your title. Yet you have one Wobble in focus and the Dad GI Joe dude in the back, out of focus.

If this was done on purpose then it is at best confusing.

You have a DSLR now so you have greater control over the depth of field, or the area in focus, in your images. Read your manual or a tutorial on DPC and learn how to use this.

Not sure that this fits the theme... nope, don't get it at all.

Firstly, the title is really unappealing. Especially in this day and age, this sort of humor is just not funny because it really does happen. Onto the photo. Old and new. Which is which? The Fischer Price toys are not that old and is that GI Joe? Is GI Joe asking the title question?? The DOF is way off and the picture simply looks like a bunch of toys thrown together at the last minute prior to the challenge. The composition of the shot is not that bad but overall, this shot is very weak and will be judged harshly.

Cute idea. I would have scored it higher if the new action figure were more in focus.

I'm so sorry, but I don't really get this. It looks like you put some work into the composition of the toys and thought to the color, but it seems blury and, well, I mainly wish I "got" the message here - how it is the old and new, that is.

Ohhh! I had that family as a child (minus the grenade thrower) :D This brought back memories.

Old and new? I don't see it.

Looks a bit dark on my monitor and I would have preferred everything in sharp focus.

Not sure about the link to the challenge, seems a little weak but at least it shows some imagination.
