Challenge: Breaking New Ground (Basic Editing III)
Camera: Canon PowerShot S50
Location: House o' mine
Date: Jan 18, 2005
Aperture: 8
ISO: 50
Shutter: 4 seconds
Galleries: Black and White, Digital Art
Date Uploaded: Jan 18, 2005

Ok...one of the things I like to do with my camera is a long exposure combined with a flash. It gives this frozen image, a blurred spacy image and a lot of fluidity to boot. Also, it helps to remove some of the harshness that a photo with just a flash can have (especially if you don't have an external flash like my point & shoot). My favorite setting for this type of photo is at night on a busy street with another person as the subject. I'd catch their face with the flash and then walk along with them as the shutter stays open for a second or so...it can give some interesting results (but judging by some of the shots on this site, maybe not the type of 'interesting' that people here go for).

To get this image, I used a 4 second exposure with a low-level flash (to tone down on the flash's effect). The flash went off while on the right side of my face, then I covered the lense with my hand, moved the camera to my left side, took my hand off the lense and let the exposure finish. I had my camera set to black & white mode, so that part was taken care of. Then I amped up the contrast to +44, turned the brightness down to -9 and adjusted the curves (which is what gives the mix of negative shadows and positive midtones/highlights). The image isn't cropped but was resized.

Thanks for the interest...see you in the funny pages.

This reminded me of the style of another artist, but not from photography...Picasso perhaps? Anyway, I found this an amazing shot, very innovative (as far as I know) and my favorite of the challenge. It pains me this wasn't more well received.

A nice multiple shot, but could have benefited from being a little more defined on the main face. 8

Not all double exposure deliver. This one does. It also imparts character. Bumping up.

The technique is very cool. I like the B&W and the grain, not entirely torn up about the main face, though. It's expression and overall appearance isn't very interesting. The rest of the shot is superb. 8
