Challenge: Breaking New Ground (Basic Editing III)
Collection: Challenges
Camera: Nikon Coolpix 5700
Location: Harwich Port, MA USA
Date: Jan 17, 2005
Aperture: f:3.1
ISO: 400
Shutter: 1/3
Date Uploaded: Jan 17, 2005

The final result of a week's worth of experiments with trying to use luminous backlighting and key lights to produce a neon effect. I am probably going to get hammered for the use of the photoshop effects, but they were part of the previsualization of this image and they are 100% legal in basic challenge: NO filters were used, and no layers with any pixel information.

Exposed cobalt blue nestling bowls in a sink full of soapsuds. Strong backlight projected through the suds and back up into the bowls. Key light to produce the specular highlights.

Photoshopped with a curves layer to radically alter the densities and throw the colors, this layer then faded to admit some background through. Very minor tweak of hue/saturation to finished composite, some gaussian blur added.

interesting, but tough shot, robt. i scored it a 7 for the immediate visual impact. i have a pretty decent monitor, and i'm picking up a disconcerting amount of banding, though...

The visible layering of the colors here is an attempt to create a "neon" effect. So it was intentional. Something new for me. Clearly not appreciated by the voters, though.

Looks like when you saved thgis for the web your color pallete got reduced to 256 or so, I can see the rgb layers.

Nice, but think the dark grey could have been darker perhaps? Seems a bit pushed.
