 The Winter Palace at sunrise. Shot from the Palace Square at eight or nine o clock in the morning. You are facing the backside entrance of the Hermitage.
The reason I shot this was because the sun only lit the Palace itself almost completely and nothing of the square itself. At this time there is also not much folk around and there are no lines of tourists at the backside entrance. Fortunately the sky worked with me on this day.

I used PT lens to correct lens distortion, straigtened the horizon, made the shadows darker and gave it a Fuji Velvia look.

St. Petersburg is lovely in the morning, remember that when you visit. Get up early!

And when you are done shooting, go inside and get lost for a whole day (or week) between the wonderful paintings, statues and other objects. But the intererior of the building itself is wonderful too. Being there early and buying a photo permit also gives a better chance of getting some good shots inside. One hour after opening the building is crowded.
