Sarah was surprised at how quickly the land disappeared behind them. Their guide had just enough time to finish a sandwich.
"Choose your course," he said, grinning.
She and her boyfriend laughed. They weren't boaters. They were here to fish.
"I'm serious," he said. "I've been doing fishing tours for 30 years. I'm going to be 70 next week. I'm tired. I'm bored. We could sail back to land, we could wander into perfect fishing, we could go so far into the sea we'll run out of supplies. It all depends on which way you choose."
"But we... we don't know where we are..." said Sarah.
"All I see is ocean," said her boyfriend.
"That's ok," said the guide, grinning again. "You can just point. We'll go in that direction."
"What if we don't point?" asked Sarah.
The guide laughed loudly. "Then I'll jump off this boat right now!"
The sun was directly above them. She couldn't even figure out the cardinal directions. She stretched out her left hand and... pointed to a horizon that looked like every other horizon.
"And away we go!" |
