 The awning stuck out like an artist's signature. Rather than being attached to the exterior as an afterthought, this cantilevered overhang was structurally integrated into the architecture, recurring frequently throughout the farming community of Lewiston.
Instead of using diagonal braces, the builder simply extended the wall planks past the corner boundary—using the building's own mass to anchor a seamless shelter on the side.
Built entirely of 2x4 boards laid flatwise and spiked layer by layer, this structural building method—known variously as false timbering, stacked plank, or box crib or crib walling construction—was engineered to withstand immense outward pressure. Common between the 1870s and 1920s, it flourished wherever cheap milled lumber and an abundance of boards made sturdy, solid-wall construction possible.
