That is a telescoping outer shell over the building. It can by deployed forward to cover the plaza, essentially doubling the amount of space inside. Amazing engineering IMO.

The seats in the theater, however, are about the least comfortable of any I've experienced in a NYC venue.

This made me think of one of the buildings I remember seeing near SE Central Park the last time I was in NY. The fisheye presentation is an excellent choice for this; really slaps you in the face with that facade.
