Part of a road cutting in Norman Street, Ballarat - in my local environment. I read an article about the geological history of this formation. The exposure is only a couple of decades old but the geology is between 550 and 330 million years old incuding time on the sea bed, tectonic plate collision and mineral infiltration. There is probably still gold in those quartz veins, even after the gold rush that played out here in the 19th century. (There is still an operational goldmine in Ballarat.)
