I stripped the lighthouse down to just the staircase and ladder, with a few large rocks forming the base of the structure. I wanted birds filling the top-left corner, but couldn't find any that looked right, so I used butterflies instead. Finally, I added a scanned human figure, duplicated it three times, and rotated each copy to fit the structure.
Once the scene was set up, I added a DSLR camera, set the crop to 1:1, and took a series of screenshots until I found one I liked.
