Challenge: Faces of Emotion (Archival) (Standard Editing*)
Collection: Portfolio
Camera: Canon EOS R6 Mark II
Location: Kópavogur, Iceland
Date: Jul 17, 2023
Aperture: 11.0
ISO: 200
Shutter: 1/100
Date Uploaded: Jan 5, 2026

My friend, dr. Arnar Eggert, teacher at the University of Iceland. When I saw the grey hair and this handsome beard I asked him if he could pay me a visit in my little studio, so I could master the use of hair light. He was more than happy to to so, and when I saw this challenge I immedatly thought of this photoshoot, simply because we had so much fun.

Shot in a portrait studio with one big softbox, and two smaller stripboxes with grid to light the hair.

Beautiful black and white portrait Tryggvi. Lighting is perfect for the hairball subject and it looks like the photo session was a "pure joy".

Fantastic portrait. You could teach me some things about lighting. Nicely done.

It's a (very) short story :) But I understand your point completly, but I felt that in this case his genuine expression was quite enough to tell a story of joy.

Thanks for understanding. I had the challenge description stuck in my head and was thinking more along the lines of candid, live, street, event scenarios. Using a studio portrait shot never even crossed my mind when thinking about what image to use for this challenge. I'm glad it did well for you and for your friend.

The topic was Faces of Emotion, why would it need to be telling a story as you define it? Why couldn't it be a studio portrait? This is a very fine face full of emotion!

Exudes candid, unfiltered personality. And the photo exhibits a kind of casual technical precision that would make the most seasoned portrait photographer jealous. Easily my top pick for this challenge. Thanks for sharing with us!
