Copilot tells me this is the smallest and most colorful falcon in North America. I believe it. This was shot early morning on a misty/rainy day, but I often find that this is good for recovering color and details in the shadows when looking upward like this. I was surprised myself to see the profile of what was clearly a bird of prey turn out to be this colorful. I would have thought it was a juvenile hawk at first.

I'm glad you are continuing to post these. Thank you. I really have very little idea of the birds that are seen in central Texas, or any other part of Texas for that matter. Great format and impressive detail. I love how you captured that turn of the head putting the beak in profile.
