Anyone who has walked barefoot or with long pants anywhere in the sandy pastures of central Texas will know the painful sting of these sandburs. They're notoriously difficult to get rid of, too, because once you see them, it's already too late to do anything about them until the next season: The burs ARE the seeds of next season's crop! So your only hope is to treat your fields with pre-emergent, selective herbicide and then either mow or graze the pastures before the residual plants have a chance to set the burs--which is challenging for hay growers who want longer growth before cutting but notice significant hay quality degradation in fields where these invasive burs have been carried by deer and other wildlife.

They're clingy, painful, and a genuine menace where I live. And insidiously clever little agents of propagation. One might almost say they are "seedy" in the conniving, metaphorical sense. Felt like a perfect subject for this challenge, since those thorny little barbs seem (to me) to speak for themselves.
