The juniper is a member of the cedar family. It's "berries" are actually cones - they just have fat, fleshy, over-lapping scales that give them the berry-like appearance. We only see these pretty little songbirds, so common elsewhere, in early spring when flocks migrate through our area. Since they visit trees en masse and can strip it in a few hours or a day or two, it's a real treat to "catch" them.
