Was trying to take a yellow rose in my back yard to submit (Yellow Rose of Texas) but bloom had already faded. Then I found this small 1/2 inch dandylion bloom with struck me as more unique.

Canon 20D with 70-200mm f/2.8L IS, 25mm extension tube, and Speedlite 580EX on tripod. First few attempts were with flash on camera but this tended to flatten all the detail in the central petals. I took the flash off camera with cord and hand held at different angles to give a little more side light. I tried about 3 dozen shots, this being my favorite.

Shot in RAW, in Photoshop CS - Increase contrast to darken background to remove ghost of stem, a little unsharp mask to sharpen the petal edges, rotate 180 so lightest part of flower is on top to simulate first rays of morning.

without the buds, this would've look great centered on a black background !

nicely composed. lighting a little flat....but i'm a little biased as i love really contrasty stuff. i like the perspective. it's the way we mostly see dandilions ...from above.

good shot.

I think this would have been better without those two little bud things. Still not bad.
