 A Boreal Owl (Aegolius Funereus) in a tree on a snowy winter day along Campbell Creek in Ancorage, Alaska, USA.

Photograph has no crop. Was taken handheld from approximately 4.5 feet away, minimum focus distance of my lens.

[user]MaryO[/user] This photo has no crop and was taken from a distance of 4.5 feet, this gives it a DoF of 1/10". Even if I had stopped down to f64 the end of the beak would still not be in focus. Part of the hazard of my preferred getting as close as possible to my subject.

I was commenting on a post on another forum a bit earlier and I realized that this frame filling shot would have been impossible on a full frame camera. The minimum focus distance of a 600mm f4 lens is around 14 feet. The Sigma 150-600 Sport will focus at around 9 feet, so even that would not fill the frame. My 300mm f4 (600mm effective due to 2x crop) can focus at 4.4 feet, which allowed me to get this frame filling image.

Looks like he's trying to figure us out. Good luck with that ;-) Nice detail on his face, although the beak looks just slightly out of focus to me. But the eyes are sharp, and that's what matters most.
