 I am terrified of elephants. I had 2 very close escapes when I was a child and since then I have great respect for these giants. This herd was amazing. Despite having calves with them, they were completely calm and chilled. We had stopped the vehicle early to give them space, but had not realized how many there were. Elephants, when left to do what they do just emerge from the bush - almost soundless. You would think such a huge animal would crush branches and make a big noise, but they don't, they literally are suddenly there.
The light was right and I was trying to get this rim light. Of course you can't really move around much, so a lot of this shot was plain luck :-).



Thank you all for your votes and lovely comments - much appreciated. I am traveling at the moment to far away places (I.e no internet connection), but took advantage of the WiFi at the airport.

The picture was taken near the Kruger National Park in South Africa.

A glimmer that conjures the whole. As if the whole is overwhelming, and it is. Can't say enough about elephants, words can't do them justice. That they're threatened by sordid desires can't be left unsaid at the moment. Here is a powerful tribute, or portrait, or poem, tones and form gathered in the opening notes of a symphony. Delivers the sense both of the monumental and the tenuous. The inkiness is astounding.
