 This kind of food are the traditional New Year's dishes in Japan. It is composed of special luxurious items that are prepared in a way to last about 3 days, so that the hard working women (yes, in the olden days pre-washing machine and pre-household gadgets, the women were working really hard in the households) could rest and enjoy 3 free days.

Taken with my phone at the inlaw's house on New Year's eve. Isn't it pretty?
