Some may laugh at my choice for this challenge or think that I am pushing the limits. I don't care. I am a first time mom, and I live in an iffy neighborhood. This guy helps me sleep at night!

While I understand the watchdog concept, this photo in and of itself does not speak heroism to me. From a photographic standpoint, I find the lighting harsh and unappealing, looks like an on-camera fliash -- in any case a softer light (or multiple lights) would have softened the shadows and, in my opinion, made this photograph more appealing. Ultimately, I think the key to making a dog photograph work in this challenge would have been to photograph the dog *doing* something that suggested heroism.
I'm just not getting a strong connection to the "hero" part of the challenge with this photograph. The harsh lighting (from flash?) and the shadows detract.
