It is a camera - here's his shot (or at least one of them). After I took the picture of him taking a picture, I asked to see what he'd taken - he showed me with pride :)
The phone belongs to grandma who was on the right. This was at a wedding reception - and yes, the background is regrettable :)

If that's a camera in his hand, this is a candid image of the making of a candid image. No sleight of hand, no mirrors. I like their kind of formal clothing and the imitation grown-up attitude. The background, though, is rather cumbersome.
