The leaf-like pink thing is the "sheath", which was tightly furled around the elongated thing, which is the "spathe", to protect it as the little tiny bumps on it matured. The little tiny bumps are the flowers :-) When the red sheath unfurls, it attracts the pollinators. I *think* this is an Anthurium, but there are thousands of varieties. It's a house plant for us, and this is the first time we have seen it bloom. It's very small; the sheath is maybe 2 inches long, the spathe perhaps an inch or so.

I can never get these things to look like anything but a phallic symbol, but somehow you managed. Well done.

It looks like it belongs in an adult toy store. I bet it was used in ancient sexual rituals. I also bet that someone will read my comment and post some link to facts that support something close to my assertion. Much like Cliff Claven. :) It deserves a 9 just for enduring all the controversy I've just stirred up.
