 This Fern is found in many parts of the Southeast US on moist or dry, usually shaded, rocky, wooded slopes, more common in well drained acid soils.
This is our only true evergreen fern and most commonly seen around Christmas time after trees have lost their green and the only green you see on the ground is the Christmas Fern.

The leaves on this fern look like stockings, thus the Christmas stocking.
