One of my favourite shots from back in the day. This is a red kite. One of the series of my birds-on-thirds wildlife portraits, along with these:

The idea is that the eye and the point of the beak in each of those portraits is on the golden mean location; in the case of Golden, above, it's named that exactly because of that reason. I like this one the most of all of those, because of its smooth tones in distinct groups, and the way the eye and the beak hold the tonal range while the rest of the image melts into the background. It's the one I find most evocative, but it's also the most overlooked in my portfolio of the lot.

I took this when I was first experimenting with the Helios 85mm which is still my favourite lens overall; I never managed to use it for much wildlife, except for this shot.

Editing was a colour filtered desaturation, and an aggressive "smart blur" filter to discretise the blurred feathers into painterly strokes; and the usual crop, resize and sharpen. At the time this sort of thing would not have been allowed on dpchallenge, but with the newly relaxed rules I guess I can dig it up from the archives.

Greetings from the Critique Club!

I love raptors and had fun trying to guess, in vain, what sort of bird it was. Never would have guessed red kite.

I would love to see the original image, because the first thing I noticed was the amount of pp done to it and its effect. It's like seeing a beautiful girl with a ridiculous amount of makeup on, all you can see is the plastered-on mask and not the beauty beneath.

Unless called for in a challenge, or applied with a very light hand, voters seem to frown on obvious use of paint-style filters. Especially with such a small dof I would love to see how much of it is actually in true sharp focus, but the softening effect of the filters kills the chance to see. And though there are indeed areas of true white and true black, the big bleachy patch above the beak separates the darkness of the iris and the beak. What little we can see of the bg is flat and punchy, an uninspiring wash of monotone grey.

Sorry if this sounds harsh, but I can see so much more potential in this image. I do hope this critique has been of help.
