Set-up: Camera on tripod and pre-focus/set exposure on target area.

In this case I was zoomed-in rather closer than optimum because I was "stalking" a hummingbird I thought was roosted in those branches. Also, it was kind of windy which is why the leaves look funny.

I have a one-button movie mode on my camera; when I saw the bird headed in that direction I started the video -- it's less than two seconds long.

Processing:
Opened the video in QuickTime Player (I'm using a old Mac) which let me advance the video one frame at a time. As I got to each frame, I just copied it and pasted it into a new layer of a Photoshop document; in this case there were 19 frames, including one with no bird to use as a base.

Since I had a dark bird and bright sky I changed all the overlying layers to Darken mode, and saved the composite to a JPEG file -- simple really, once you capture the video.

I'm pretty sure if you shoot a white bird (e.g. seagull) against a blue sky you can just use Lighten mode instead ...
