Our local cranberry bogs are something that visitors to Harwich (or Cape cod in general) often like to see as they usually have not seen one before. They have a lovely deep rich color at the moment.

All cranberry bogs are sited next to a pond where the water for their irrigation and flooding is drawn. In 15 years of living on the cape I have seen lots of bogs flooded (either to protect the plants in a hard winter, or during harvesting so that the berries will float free and can be removed more easily) but I have never before seen a sprinkler system running. On reading more about the care of these plants I realize that is probably because that irrigation is typically done very early in the morning!!

Cranberry plant information: The cranberry plant has a fine root system that only grows in the upper 4 to 6 inches of the soil... The root systems are also very able to withstand long periods under water in the winter, which is a genetic trait of many wetland species.
