A bountiful harvest of birch catkins awaits this male Common Redpoll. This is the major source of food for this nomad from the far North. The reason I was able to photograph this rare bird successfully was because his hunger exceeded his fear of the camera lens. Estes Park is the southern extreme of his travels. He came here for the catkins. Canon EOS 5DmkIII, Canon EF400mm f/5.6L USM, 1/1600s @ f/5.6, ISO 800, lens focal length 400mm. 12/19/2015 2:27PM.
