taken during the day with a +10 neutral density filter so I could get a long exposure

[Jun. 23rd, 2015 08:36:43 PM]

So, this is Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond, VA. Opened in the 1840s, it's a truly remarkable place.

From Wikipedia: It is the resting place of two United States Presidents, James Monroe and John Tyler, as well as the only Confederate States President, Jefferson Davis. It is also the resting place of 28 Confederate generals, more than any other cemetery in the country; these include George Pickett and J.E.B. Stuart.[3]

It has a 90 ft pyramid that's a monument to over 18,000 confederate enlisted that were buried there.

It's also haunted. It has a dog statue that was placed at the grave of a girl who died in 1862. The dog is said to switch directions in which it is looking.

This is the tomb where the Richmond Vampire fled. That is what the ghost is searching for.

The cemetery closes at 6pm, and it's light until close to 9pm, but I really wanted to ghost my daughter. And then I remembered that I had a +10 neutral density filter. That allowed me to have a long exposure (8 seconds at f11). She stayed in the shot for about 3 seconds and then moved out of the picture. I had to vignette it heavily to give it more of a nighttime feel.

What drew me to this shot was the marble walkway and the tombstones up on the hill. The walkway just drew me into the photo. I liked this centered -- I wanted the whole shot to lead into the tomb.

Thanks for all the comments!!

I was "buried" in unexpected work before the challenge rolled over and intended to give out some bling. Even though it's after the fact, I wanted to pin a BTC award on this quirky, engaging entry. This is for you...

BTW, thanks for sharing a little info on the creation of the photo... I've got a 10 stop ND filter as well, and it's making me want to "test" now. Darn all of you creative people!!! ;)

One with a different take - not through all the entries, but the first I've see like this. Well done.
Back to add: I saw a few others. IMO this was the best.

Come on in, the water's fine in this POOL. To me, the lady seems almost whimsical - I think it is the posture and the position of the hand. More like a child excited to explore a cave rather than a lady requesting entrance into the nether world. Great lighting, staging, and ghostly image capture.

Somehow, Although it adds a good effect to the perception of phantasmic revelation, the very straight stone through the body distracts a bit.

Lovely concept and well captured. I just have one concern and that is that the photo is too centred and not adding to the overall value to the shot.

Quite eerie, well done! Gotta ask, was this done twilight, or after dark?
