Eerie, abandoned housing development (Tundra Village) near where I live.

I came across this development when I was driving around one day looking at wildflowers. I was so intrigued that when the Abandoned Buildings challenge came up, I thought it was perfect for that. For anyone who would like to know a little more, here is a story from 4/2014: Tundra Village

I completely understand the decision and thank the SC for their review and consideration. I did NOT think that the cloud texture would be a disqual, since it was created digitally AS a texture, rather then being an "image", but I do understand why the decision was made, and its cool! For the further edification of those who wonder about disquals, here are the original & "textures" used:

Disqualification Details
You must create your entry from a single capture. In this case, we can't consider the clouds you added to the otherwise-blank sky as "texture" because you've replaced one sky with another, crossing the line into creating a "composite" or "double-exposure" type image. If the cloud texture had instead been, say scratches on a wall or peeling paint or whatever, we would not have a problem with this because those clearly ARE added textural elements in this context.

And btw this is a fantastic picture - and for purposes other than DPChallentge, your editing choices are right on in terms of the scene and mood. Love it.

I applied the cloud texture at only 20%, and did lower the opacity across the houses...I did not see anything in the rules that disallowed that, so if that is part of the rules, I missed that. For me, if you are explicity allowed to use layers & layers masks, that assumes the ability to lower the opacity or completely mask part of a layer. When the cloud texture was overlayed on the image, it was barely noticeable, it was after I overlayed the additional texture, then applied additional toning that the appearance of "clouds" really became apparent. I didn't even "think" DQ, since to me, a texture is a texture...but I completely "get" this...the sky was totally flat, and after the editing, it did have the appearance of having a cloudy sky.

Thank you for your question and your kind comments!

Congrats on the ribbon. Awesome entry. Incredible that such a development can just be abandoned.

Im of two minds here. I like the highly stylized approach of heavy frame and subtle hues, yet this is such a great find for the challenge that I wonder if you didn't give up too much in the textures and richness of tones to get that effect. I would love to see some outtakes of this set with a more documentary approach perhaps with a more burnt in brooding sky rather than the wash of empty we see here.

gives even more meaning to "the boring burbs" - wow - casualty of the banksters putting our economy in the ditch I take it. the frame is needed to tie it all in - just a tad heavy with it for me. toning is spot on. a great statement image. 7. gl

There's a poignant, just-missed quality to this image, which elicits a deep sigh. Seems to have run out of luck as much as financing. The heavy, lowering sky, suits the scene perfectly, the washed out coloration completing this enervating dream of never attaining your destination. The vignette nicely serves the appearance of a post card. Excellent.

These are fairly new homes! It would be very interesting to learn the story behind this haunting scene.

While I like what the toning had done to the structures and the land, the sky looks unworldly; however, this is an unworldly scene, so maybe it fits. Some may find the vignette disruptive, but I have the opinion it adds a "vintage" feel to a modern setting. I like the way the mud "street" pulls one's eye through the image.

Desperately sad situation - unfortunately, well suited for this challenge. Good choice.

What an odd scene to behold. Almost new looking homes with no paved street. Not fond of the very heavy boarder/vignette, but I love the image. 8
