This image was so accidental and yet so intentional. Coming back from the PhotoPlus show in Manhattan I walked through the Manhattan Ferry Terminal and saw this staircase and then the nearly empty room behind it and knew not only that it was a good picture, but that it would work perfectly for this challenge. I have several with people in different positions and viewed from slightly different angles. I liked this best overall, but the person in red bothered me because they were so close to the edge of the frame. Then I tried several crops and realized that it was a lesser image without them. I'm glad some folks felt so strongly about it.

Congratulations on your ribbon for a fascinating image that meets the challenge.
Very well seen and interpreted, this has a real Escher feel to it for me, it just feels however I look at it, it folds in on itself again, I love it. The image itself is very well executed, the exposure is spot on with great detail throughout. Like you, I would have been equally perplexed by the person in red, they are too close to the edge and looking out of frame which doesn't help either but for some curious reason it works well. Reds are always so dominant, your eye is always drawn to them perhaps its the unusual position of it within the frame that somehow goes against everything we know and probably adhere to too much. Thank you for the original and other version, by far, your interpretation here is also the best of them.
I'll be honest, I have already remarked on another flipped entry that I think the real challenge here was to create an upside down impression in camera and this would definitely have been my approach to the challenge but then that's probably why I've never ribboned! Well done, apologies for the delay, Sid.
Great image. Well seen. Love the tones, and the splash of red. Did you consider a horizontal flip? I know I would have done just to see if I preferred a left to right flow within the image rather than the right to left one we see here. Ties with one other image for my highest score and I hope to see it ribbon.
Penny, yes indeed, I did try it flipped horizontally. In fact, my initial edit was done this way because I did a 180 degree rotation of the original image. I liked it just fine, but then decided to try it the other way, because it is the same basic angle that I saw the room from in the first place. When I did I found that I preferred this one. Why? Perhaps because it reminded me of the original, unflipped view, and maybe because I felt the left-to-right leading line was a little more traditional, where the right-to-left felt "off" in a good way and might help with the disorienting of the viewer and delay the discovery that this was actually upside down.
Thanks for showing the horizontally flipped alternative. The way you had it was much more interesting!!

To me the upside down should make sense even if upside down. I couldn't find anything so I did not enter. This doesn't make sense, however, it is just so well shot and seen, it deserves to ribbon. 9 ETA: the person in red is simply the eye catcher in the picture. Love it
