My family has been in S W Florida for about 6 generations. I'm happy that the park service/ forestry finally figured out that the natural landscape here does better if it is allowed to burn off the fluff every few years. We both my grandfather and my father were woods guides. My grandfather, born about 1875 at Ft Myers guided with an ox cart, which was a popular mode of land transportation in this area back then. My Dad and I used to burn palmetto patches in the middle of wet season so that deer and quail would have good places to live and fresh growth to eat.
Nice snapshot of an activity that not too many people understand fully. |

Regardless that you have explained that this is a "controlled burn" - It looks uncontrolled, this fire and smoke among those vulnerable pines shows the very realistic danger of how small fires can easily expand & consume many acres of trees or prairie. I think an excellent image - gave 9. |

Clouds of smoke indeed. I can even smell the burning bushes.
OTOH, the photo doesn't work for me at all :-( |
