Photograph Information Photographer's Comments
Challenge: Garry Winogrand (Advanced Editing VII)
Camera: Canon EOS-5D Mark II
Lens: Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM
Date: Feb 15, 2013
Aperture: 4.5
ISO: 200
Shutter: 1/200
Date Uploaded: Feb 16, 2014

Straight from camera, jpeg. I plan to continue shooting this way whenever I can.

Shooting like Winogrand turned out to be very engaging and demanding, which is why I like it.

Thanks! I'm overwhelmed by the great comments. I like how the picture was interpreted, especially by ubique - much appreciated!

Wendy said it - it's great how challenges make you shoot like you wouldn't normally shoot. That is, if you really want to engage yourself. After reading so much about his ways, I *think* I understood Winogrand's way of getting involved and interacting with people - if you look closely, you will see that even on the obvious candids there is a secret ingredient, often you can almost feel the smile that follows the shutter click.

Bottomline - I failed to achieve this kind of interaction or involvement. This is my son, posing in front his favorite place to eat (he needs a haircut, as you can tell). I would not agree that this would be Winogrand's throwaway, though. I just wish it was a more genuine involvement with a random person on the street.

Looking at other entries, I feel that most failed at this task as well. "Plain" candids are not the essence here. Maybe it's the different era when people embraced interaction of this kind more easily... who knows.

Such a handsome young man. I'm enjoying getting to watch him grow up DPC style.

I enjoyed the narrative here. I know all about sins who need haircuts!

One day I hope to visit your city -- it's very near where my grandfather was from.

Good close candid of a Winogrand subject but I think is might have been a throwaway except in his private album of women. She's too self-content to be publishable among his parade of lost humanity.

This is a beautiful photograph. I see it as an environmental portrait, where she is the owner of the restaurant/cafe, or at least works there. That may in fact be wrong, but it's not wrong for me. The composition, and the lovely balance of the tonal masses, plus the subject's orientation (projecting out of the premises, rather than in) suggests too strong a connection between the two – i.e. person & place – to be just an arbitrary choice on your part. 8. Thank you.
