One of the first things I do every morning in the winter is go out to check the greenhouse temperature. We have had night time temperatures range from high 20's and low 30's to - 15 (F) lately. My little electric heater can handles temps down to mid 20's, but I need the propane heater to supplement when the temp goes below that. And no, although I live in Colorado, I'm not growing anything that would not be legal in other states (unless of course someplace has banned geraniums, herbs, and vegetable starts) Since my husband's heart attack and quadruple bypass surgery last June, his doctor has had him on a plant-based diet - no meat, no poultry, no fish, no dairy, no oils, no nuts, no avocados, no coconut... fruits and veggies, and whole grains are o.k. (see "Forks Over Knives", Esselstyn, and "the China Study") It has been difficult to give up cheese and olive oil, but actually, most things we previously sauteed in oil, will sautee in vegetable broth just as well. Anyway, we are now growing a lot of our own food ourselves. I imagine we will be expanding the greenhouse area as time goes on, and are looking into coldframe growing and tunnels and all. By the way, the change in eating habits does seem to work. His cholesterol has dropped from 240 to 135. Mine has dropped too. And he's dropped nearly 50 lbs since the end of July.
Another bonus is making myself get up in time to see sunrises like this one.
Wow, all sorts of bonuses. That greenhouse is just gorgeous catching the sunrise like this. And congrats on what sounds like a wonderful partnership - he couldn't have done it without your amazing support.
How splendid! The glow of the greenhouse is so very warming and welcoming. And congratulations on the lifestyle changes - far more willpower than I have. I'd starve. :-)
You made a sparkling little jewel of bits of dusks and dawns.
What a great story of human adaptability and wisdom. Keep me posted please with the progress of both greenhouse and diet. Sounds like a new Robinson Crusoe.
A pity the your Broncos will lose to my Patriots... But thanks for sharing that story, Patsy. Give my regards to your husband, who if he's as "old" as you is remarkable for having survived a quad :-)
