When the challenge was announced, there was clearly no other shot for me to take but this, at Griffith Observatory. I did cheat a little, though, as I couldn't get up there on the Solstice proper. This is two days later, and what a crazy day it was. I had to do last minute shopping for our dinner party for 15 people, dropped everything off (fretting about how low the sun was already), picked up my two cameras (one with a wide angle, the other with the fisheye), raced up the hill to the Observatory, got there almost too late as the sun was about to disappear over the horizon, snapped about 6 pictures with each camera, then raced back home. In this one, the crowd parted just perfectly and revealed the little girl gracing the glowing sun. The distortion works perfectly for me, creating a mini world revolving around the sun.

Re: the horizontal vs. vertical composition. Yes, I took pictures in both orientations, but the horizontal version emphasized more than just the line, and the fisheye distortion of the horizon created the illusion of the curvature of the earth. I thought this was more interesting. Not to mention that the pose of the little girl was the best in this take.

Excellent take on the venue... My score was high, fits the exuberance.

Griffith Observatory? An idea well captured.

Interesting. Did you consider a vertical crop to emphasize the strong line pointing to the setting sun?

The central child seems to be being endowed with super power amidst the obliviousness of the hoi polloi. Calmly cinematic, aided by the wide angle lens.

Excellent gap, with a single silhuette
