It's an interesting image but not powerful enough for Koestler's take on communism. It's not frightening enough. it quivers but it does not scream in pain.

Fascinating image. Can't connect it at all to the novel. Oh, unless you just simply saw the word dark in the title and thought "Gee, this is dark"..

Really, the book was about trials and prison, etc. This doesn't speak to that.

4 - because it IS a wonderful image.

This is a studious attempt at showing the grueling horror of torture more literally described in the novel. Clawing clouds of light and dark conjure up the horrific atmosphere of the story. The image itself is well constructed to that end with exaggerated contrast and textures extending the visual impression to harsh extremes. 7

I read this book... actually I started it and couldn't finish. This image does a good job of explaining how it felt to read it. a maze of pain. 6

I really do not understand the picture and how it represents darkness at noon.
I have not read the book, so I don't know if there is anything to this.

There are aspects that I like such as the contrast, but overall it doesn't make me feel anything.

Gave it a 5

6...I'm not familiar with the novel, but this is fun to look at...great movement a texture.

Perfect range of deep blacks and stark whites. I'm not sure what this is, and I can't find a relation to the story. A tad too abstract for me, leaving the tie to the story something I can only imagine. Might have scored it higher in a different challenge. 6

Intriguing. Good BW. Bleak as the title. I do not know what I would have done differently. 6

Quite a peculiar image, not quite sure what I am looking at..and in that, I find it intriguing and deserving of a longer look. The processing is a little extreme and contrasty for my tastes though, wish it was a little more subdued.

Don't understand this shot. It's an abstract that doesn't catch my eye.
So I gave it a 4

A brave attempt to capture a dark time, Arthur probably would have liked it. Good use of interesting patterns and perspective to reinforce the mood.6.
