Challenge: The Smile II (Advanced Editing VII)
Collection: 2013 Challenges

Date: Sep 29, 2013
Aperture: f.2
ISO: 200

I knew from the start that I wanted to do a sugary smile. Literally. So I got some pink fondant, food colouring, the closest I could find to Chiclets, Popeye Candy stix (not called candy Cigarettes anymore for obvious reasons) and recreated the lit tip at the end with red food colouring. Gold craft paint on the tooth didn't cooperate fully, so I left it that way - adds to the seedy air.

Oh yeah, and got my sweet babboo to blow smoke as required...yeah...he CONTINUES TO SMOKE despite an immediate family history of cancer popping up in the smokers in his family :-(

His dad's teeth are now falling out at the rate of one or more a week. So that was lurking in the back of my mind as I positioned the *teeth*.

That and as I moved the cardboard on which everything rests, I thought of a barfly coming on to some hapless guy. Hey, in the right kind of bar it could even be a guy coming on to a girl. Just the whole sordid mess that is smoking and where it often leads to.

Laid it all out on a krylon-painted piece of cardboard, positioned camera on tripod overhead and shot with both ambient light and later on with flash. Used pink fondant for gums, then added red food colouring and kneaded it in to make the lips. Originally I was going to make big full lush lips, but things went their own way.

pp: Shot RAW, rotate, crop, clone out minor elements, brightness/contrast, dodge/burn, resize, sharpen, save for web

And you know what? Even if this entry tanks, as it probably will, it's my 500th challenge entry. And the last entry I will have shot with the D90. Its time has come.

Would be nice if smoke came out of the tip of "cigarette" only. Very strong composition though (very anti-smoking!) :-)
